Being the division of the Mauryan Empire, Rajasthan was also ruled by some of the other clans like the Arjunyas, Kushans, Hunas, and Saka Satraps. As per the Archaeological findings, Rajasthan has also been linked to the Harappan Civilization and Indus Valley Civilization. Around 700 AD, the Rajput Dynasty came into existence.
This era saw some conflicts between the Rajput rulers for domination and deteriorated their unity. Around 1200 AD, the regions of Nagaur, Ajmer and Ranthambhore came under the Mughal ruler- Akbar, who took the authority from the Rajput rulers, and forced his dominance on the Rajputs either through an alliance or by war. The Rajputs rulers like Rana Uday Singh, Rana Kumbha, Rana Pratap, Bhappa Rawal, and Prithviraj Chauhan ruled during this era.
This era brought about the termination of the Mughal Empire in 1707. In 1775 Rajasthan and rest of northern India saw the rise of the Maratha rulers. But, at the end of the 17th century, the Britishers took control of the state. From 1817-18 the British rulers had coalition treaties with most of the princely states of Rajputana (now Rajasthan). During the Indian Independence, the state of Rajasthan initially comprised 19 major states, and it was in 1956 that the state finally came to its current being.
Spread across a total area of 343,000 sq km, Rajasthan is separated by the magnificent Aravalli Ranges which goes from north-east to south-west covering s distance of around 687 km. The region to the north west of the Aravalli ranges comprises the lovely Jodhpur, the wonderful Jaisalmer, and the amazing Barmer and Bikaner regions. While the land on one side of the ranges is dry, and home to the great Thar Desert, the other side is boasts great vegetation, with hill rocks, and deposits of silver, zinc and lead.
Geologically, it is believed that several regions came into existence in Rajasthan much before the Himalayas. Moreover, it is also stated that culture came to Rajasthan much before it entered any of the other Indian regions. Archeological findings at Kalibangan in the district of Ganganagar have confirmed that a structured and developed society was into existence in the state even before the Harappan culture. There are various prehistoric sites and monuments located on the landscape which throws limelight on its existence.
The land of Rajasthan came under the rule of various kingdoms and many wars took place on its soil between various rulers and empires for superiority. The Rajputs served the land of Rajasthan and saved the land from the foreign invasions of the Turks, confronted the Sultans of Delhi, and later the Mughals. The conflicts and clashes between the Rajputs and the Muslims rulers of Delhi, lasted for up to 500 years. During this time, many rulers came into existence like the famous Prithvi Raj Chauhan, Rana Pratap, Rana Sangha, Rana Rattan Singh of Chittaur, and Man Singh of Ajmer.
